GERMANY - Model European Union Mainz 2014

MODEL EU MAINZ 2014

2 - 6 July 2014

Model European Union Mainz (MEUM) is a simulation of European politics organized by the Department of Political Science at the University of Mainz, AEGEE Mainz/Wiesbaden and Bringing Europeans Together Association (BETA).

MEUM takes place for the fifth time now and has established itself as a fixed event in the calendar of the University of Mainz.

70 participants from all over Europe will come to the city for a 3-day simulation of the ordinary legislative procedure, pre-Lisbon known as “co-decision”. Participants will slip into the roles of national Ministers, Members of the European Parliament and Journalists. MEUM offers young Europeans the chance to get a first-hand insight into the workings of the complex political system that is the European Union. Starting point for the debate will be two “real” proposals for legislation that have been drafted by the European Commission in recent years.

Participants, in their roles as MEPs and Ministers, will deliver speeches, work on amendments to the proposal texts and organise majorities in order to shape the legislation to their advantage. Journalists will monitor and critically report on this political process throughout the simulation.

But MEUM is much more than just a non-formal learning process with a focus on the European Union. Participants will improve their rhetorical and language skills, since the whole simulation will take place in English. A diverse social program will provide the participants with the possibility to learn more about our national and regional culture and give them the chance to make friends from all over Europe!

Application deadline 13 April 2014
